Tens of thousands of engineers and technical workers at Apple, Google and other giant Silicon Valley firms have won a federal judge’s approval to pursue a class-action suit against the companies for allegedly suppressing wages by agreeing not to recruit or hire each other’s employees. The engineers’ suit alleged that the companies decided by 2005 to halt the practice of “cold-calling” each other’s technical employees to offer them jobs at higher pay. The practice of open recruiting enabled employees to negotiate higher salaries with their own firms, increased their awareness of competitors’ pay, and prompted Google to issue across-the-board raises in 2010 to keep its staff intact, the engineers said.
